Understanding Behavior in Healthcare
For nearly two decades, social scientists have been coming together to explore the role of human behavior in healthcare—enhancing training, promoting well-being, and improving the patient experience. Founded by Professor Rhona Flin and her team at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, Behavioural Sciences as Applied to Surgery (BSAS) gradually grew from human factors approaches to improving safety in surgical settings.
Now, BSAH is a global community of social and behavioural scientists dedicated to advancing patient care and healthcare outcomes through research, collaboration, and shared insight. With significant insights emerging from human factors, cognitive science, team science, anthropology, sociology, and other fields, BASH has come to embrace many approaches to understanding and supporting healthcare. The community comes together annually at to understand emerging trends, engage with innovation, and foster meaningful connections that drive professional growth.
