About BSAH

We are a global network of behavioural science professionals committed to advancing healthcare through research, collaboration, and applied insight. Our mission is to improve patient experiences, safety, and outcomes by integrating behavioural science into healthcare systems, practices, and education. We envision a future where interdisciplinary collaboration drives innovation in care delivery, supports the well-being of healthcare teams, and promotes data-informed, human-centred approaches across acute and elective healthcare settings. Through our annual meetings and ongoing initiatives, we foster a vibrant, inclusive community dedicated to shaping more resilient and responsive healthcare environments.

Founded by Professor Rhona Flin and her team at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, Behavioural Sciences as Applied to Surgery (BSAS) started as a group of human factors experts focused on improving safety in surgical settings. Since that first meeting nearly two decades ago, social scientists have been coming together to explore the role of behaviour and environmental factors in healthcare—enhancing training, promoting well-being, and improving the patient experience.

Now, BSAH is an international community of social and behavioural scientists dedicated to advancing patient care and healthcare outcomes through research, collaboration, and shared insight.

Tools4Teams Network

Shaping the Future of Healthcare Teams Through Behavioural Science

Tools4Teams is a collaborative research and training network focused on improving teamwork in healthcare through behavioural science. The project was initiated by a group of clinicians, educators, and researchers who connected through the BSAS community, united by a shared interest in enhancing how healthcare teams function. Funded by the EU under the Marie-Skłodowska Curie-Doctoral Networks programme of Horizon Europe, the network brings together institutions and experts from across Europe to train the next generation of researchers and develop innovative, evidence-based tools.

The network’s activities span research, education, and practical application—addressing real-world challenges such as situational awareness, communication, patient and family involvement, and the integration of digital technologies into team-based care. Through hands-on training events, interdisciplinary collaboration, and partnerships with healthcare organisations, Tools4Teams is building capacity and driving change in how teams work together across care settings. If you’re interested in strengthening collaboration and safety in healthcare, Tools4Teams offers a space to connect, learn, and make a lasting impact.
